Groceries Not Guns

We are calling on grocery stores to adopt a gun sense policy because:

  • In over 40 states it’s legal for virtually anyone to openly carry a loaded gun, with absolutely no permit or safety training, often without a background check.

  • Many stores’ current policy allows people to openly carry guns in grocery aisles, creating an unsafe and uncomfortable environment for customers and employees alike.

  • While we’re shopping with our kids, we don’t want to have to guess whether someone carrying a gun is just another shopper, or an imminent threat to our safety.

Prohibit Open Carry In Your Stores: Hy-Vee, Inc.
Families deserve to feel safe when they’re at the grocery store. We shouldn’t have to stand in a checkout line next to a stranger openly carrying a gun -- especially because in over 40 states, virtually anyone can openly carry a loaded gun with no permit or training. Thanks to loopholes in federal gun laws, it’s also easy for people in most of those states to get a gun without going through a background check. Businesses have the right -- and the responsibility -- to stand up for customer and employee safety. That’s why we’re asking grocery stores across the country to prohibit the open carry of guns in their stores. We strongly urge Hy-Vee Inc. to join the increasing number of American companies standing up for customer safety.
